Does someone who lives in canada need to have a job before they travel to the untied states?

im traveling to the states to spend the summer with my boyfriend, im only booking a one way ticket and will later book my ticket back. i had heard that they require you to have a job, and will there be any problem with me just booking a one way ticket. thanks :)
