I'm thinking about a career in journalism, maybe working at a magazine..what can i do to succeed?

I'm a freshman in high school and my school doesnt have a newspaper, so its hard to get a little experience. I want to go to Northwestern University in Chicago or Columbia University. They both seem to have good journalism programs. But, they are very hard schools to get into, how can i start to prepare and have a better chance?
