Question about Supernovae?

As gravity pushes in on the star, it begins to compress it. The very atoms of the star are being compressed. Compression of the atoms being squeezed and compacted into a tighter, smaller space causes an increase of energy and that energy is eventually released in an explosion. Although I say "eventually," this whole process takes place in the space of seconds.
